Institut De France
|
Description
|
The Institut de France - made up of five learned academies - is probably best known for one of them: the Académie Française. The building itself was designed by Le Vau in 1663-4 and constructed using money bequeathed by Cardinal Mazarin. It occupies the site formerly of the Nêsle gate and tower - part of the medieval wall of Paris.
Of the Institut, Zola wrote (L'Oeuvre, 1886):
There is no venerable forest, no mountain road,
no prairie or plain where the sun sets so triumphally
as behind the dome of the Institut. This is Paris
going to sleep in her glory.
