Inaugurated in December 1996, the French National Library - architect D. Perrault - can accommodate 1,600 people. D. Perrault chose a resolutely modern architecture, using wood, glass and steel. The collections are housed in four towers surrounding a central garden. The Library is divided into 5 departments : sciences and technical ; art and literature ; political, juridical and economic sciences ; philosophy, history, man and society sciences ; audiovisual. The collections (300 000 books) can be consulted (children under 16 are not admitted). A part of the Library, situated at the garden level, is now reserved for research workers. Two exhibition rooms can house temporary exhibitions dealing on the patrimony of the National Library. Concerts and conferences are organized in two conference halls.
